Mikayla O’Neill (DMSB ’27) is a second year International Business student who participated in a Dialogue of Civilizations across Spain and Morocco this past summer. Mikayla was able to take advantage of the First Year Summer Fee Waiver.
“I embarked on my first year Summer 1 Dialogue of Civilizations where I went to Spain and Morocco to study the History and Literature of Medieval Spain and Morocco: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Uneasy Coexistence. In Spain, I was able to see Picasso paintings in Madrid, zipline across a river in Toledo, see the famous architectural wonder the Alhambra in Granada, see the Mosque-Cathedral in Cordoba and the Real Alcázar (and a few peacocks) in Sevilla. We got to watch Flamenco dancers on our last night in Spain before venturing across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa. In Morocco, I experienced negotiating with vendors in the Medinas (aka markets) of Rabat and Marrakesh, walking through ancient Roman Ruins and seeing Barbary macaque monkeys up close in the Atlas Mountains. I also explored the famous film destination in the Sahara Desert, the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou, and visited Casablanca to see the beautiful Hassan II Mosque. I am so happy I decided to embark on this DOC because I participated in so many enriching, unique activities that allowed me to expand my global knowledge through cultural immersion. The Honors Program aided me in going on my trip through waiving the DOC fee and my flight costs which allowed me to fulfill my first year Honors Impact Badge.”
