Global Funding – First Year Admits
Explore the resources Honors provides to engage with the world.
These resources are specifically for our First Semester, First Year admits (i.e., students who were admitted to the Honors Program before matriculation and began in the Fall semester of their first year). For internal admits (i.e., students who joined the Honors Program after matriculation into Northeastern), please refer to Global Funding for Internal Admits.
Global Support Fund
All Honors students who were admitted to the Honors Program prior to enrolling at Northeastern (i.e., during the Fall of their first year) have access to up to $6,000 through the Global Support Fund. Students can begin using these funds during the Spring semester of their first year.
First-Year Funding Opportunities
The Summer Fee Waiver and Passport Reimbursement opportunities are only available for first year Honors students who were admitted to the Honors Program prior to enrolling at Northeastern.
First Year Summer Fee Waiver
To support Honors students’ participation in Dialogue of Civilizations (DOCs) and Summer In programs, first year students have access to a First-Year Summer Fee Waiver. This can be used on any DOC (including Honors DOCs) and Summer In experience during Summer 1 or Summer 2 after their first year.
Process for Using the Summer Fee Waiver
There is no separate application. All first year Honors students who are enrolled in a DOC and Summer In will have the Summer Fee Waiver automatically applied to their student account.
If plane tickets are not covered in your Fee, please save your receipts to be reimbursed.
FAQ about the DOC Fee Waiver

- The Summer Fee Waiver covers the program fee and reimbursement of roundtrip economy travel (if this is not included in the program fee).
Does the Summer Fee Waiver cover tuition?
- No, it does not cover tuition. Students are responsible for tuition. However, financial aid, including scholarships, does apply to tuition. Please contact Student Financial Services to discuss coverage for their specific case.
When can the Summer Fee Waiver be used?
- The Summer Fee Waiver can only be used during Summer 1 or Summer 2 of a student’s first year at Northeastern.
Passport Reimbursement
All students who are U.S. citizens are eligible for assistance in obtaining their first passport. This reimbursement does not apply towards passport renewals or to non-U.S. citizens.
The Honors Program will reimburse students for the following fees incurred in applying for their first passport:
- Passport application fee ($130)
- Execution fee ($35)
- Photo fee ($17)
Process for obtaining passport reimbursement
Students will need to pay for each fee using three separate checks. The Honors Program will then provide reimbursement.
Please contact the Honors Program with any questions.
Additional Funding and Financial Aid Opportunities
There are many additional funding sources for global endeavors open to all Honors students. They include generous scholarships specifically for students who receive Pell Grants. Students are encouraged to prepare their applications early.
Funding Opportunities
In order to increase the likelihood of successfully applying for funds, all applicants should review funding details and prepare application long before the deadline. Students who are applying for non-NU funding are strongly encouraged to consult the NU Undergraduate Research and Fellowships office in order to receive guidance on putting together a competitive application.
