Sarah Kanouse, MFA

Associate Professor of Media Arts (CAMD)

Program: Art and Design

Description of Subject Interest and Expertise: Sarah Kanouse is an artist, writer, and filmmaker examining the politics of landscape and space. Migrating between video, photography, and performative forms, her expanded nonfiction media projects shift the visual dimension of landscape to allow hidden stories of environmental and social transformation to emerge. She works on solo and collaborative research-based media projects that support climate/environmental justice and Indigenous liberation.

Description of Current Project/Scholarly Endeavor: I am currently working on two major projects:

  1. A multi-channel video and series of public events examining the colonial histories of public parklands in Boston
  2. An expanded, site-based nonfiction audio project surfacing Indigenous perspectives on place in eastern Massachusetts, using a co-creation process.

Profile of Student Researcher: I would love to work with and mentor students interested in socially and environmentally engaged nonfiction media practices. You will gain experience with media production, interview techniques, and archival research practices.
