Zachary Hoglund (COE ’24) is a fourth year Bioengineering and Biochemistry student who presented his work focusing on the role of blood vessels in the development of Alzheimer’s disease at the 2023 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in Amsterdam. Zachary was able to take advantage of the Honors Global Bank Account to fund this experience.

“Thanks to the Honors Global Bank Account, I was given the incredible opportunity to attend and present at the 2023 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in Amsterdam. I presented a research poster focusing on work I completed at the Hyman Lab of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, which I initially joined for my first co-op. My work focused on understanding the role of blood vessels in directing the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Presenting this research allowed me to share my findings and receive valuable feedback from the highly experienced audience of researchers and clinicians. In addition, as the largest dementia research conference in the world, I was able to learn about the latest advancements in Alzheimer’s research directly from world-renowned experts. This experience was incredibly impactful in solidifying my desire to continue researching neurological disease and will serve as the basis for the research career I aspire to pursue.”

What other activities are you involved in on campus?

  • Innovators for Global Health (IGH)
    • “While each of these activities is highly meaningful to me, the most impactful has been IGH, where I have developed important skills in leadership and addressing global challenges. Specifically, IGH is a student organization for which I serve as one of the presidents and focuses on designing low-cost medical devices for partner medical facilities in Ghana. In fact, I plan to use the rest of my Global Bank Account to visit our partners this coming spring break!”
  • Tau Beta Pi (TBP) Engineering Honor Society
  • College of Engineering Students Activities Council (SAC)

What is your favorite Honors memory?

My favorite Honors memory was getting to know my fellow Honors classmates in East Village freshman year, many of whom have become my closest friends.

What events or activities would you recommend to new Honors students?

I would highly recommend finding ways to engage in global experiences at Northeastern. When I first came, I had thought that the Global Bank Account was just for existing opportunities, such as DOCs, but it is meant to allow you to engage in any global activity you would find personally meaningful. Northeastern wants you to become a global citizen and the Global Bank Account is a great way to do so!
